The next time, I think I'll hand him Design Patterns in Ruby instead. As I mentioned in my last post (Ruby Matters: Meta-programming, Synthesis, and Generation), the Gang of Four design patterns book should have been named "Palliatives for C++". Ruby's standard library has it wrong. The book If you know the basics of both design patterns and Ruby, you can safely skip this as you won't find anything of overwhelming interest here. In pursuit of my Master's degree, I had planned to take a course called “Object Oriented Languages and Systems” during the summer of 2012. Whenever a new programmer asked me about patterns, that was the book I would hand him. Is it still wrong if everyone is doing it? I finally got my hands on a shiny new copy of Design Patterns in Ruby 1. A few years ago I didn't know that design patterns existed when writing software. Sitting on my desk at work is a copy of trusty the old GoF book.
